Cougars slip to tenth in Oregon

In the final round of the Airstream Adventures Classic at the Willamette Valley Country Club in Canby, Oregon, the WSU men’s golf team slid in the standings, finishing tied for 10th.

The tournament started back up Tuesday, finishing the second round then starting the third and final round after a postponing Monday due to darkness.

The Cougars, who tied for 10th with Fresno State, finished the tournament 28 strokes over par with a total team score of 892.

After leading through the first round and what was played of the second round Monday, No. 34 UNLV held on to the lead, finishing the tournament at (-22, 842). After being neck-and-neck with UNLV Monday, No. 30 Oregon could not keep up with UNLV and finished the tournament eight strokes back at (-14, 850), placing Oregon in second. St. Mary’s (CA) moved up the leader board two spots to claim third after finishing the tournament at (+2, 866).

The Cougars, who have struggled recently to put themselves in a good standing continued in the Airstream Adventures Classic Tuesday. In the last three tournaments, the Cougars have placed 10th, ninth and 10th.

Freshman AJ Armstrong, who led all Cougars, finished tied for 20th after finishing the tournament at (+2, 218). Armstrong recorded his third top-25 finish of the season Tuesday, and was 12 strokes back from tournament-champion Sulman Raza of Oregon (-10, 206).

Sophomore Derek Bayley, who was tied with Armstrong at 14th after the first two rounds, failed to crack the top-25 in the tournament. After shooting a 77 in the third round, Bayley tied for 31st and shot (+5, 221) overall.

Senior Evan Omelia finished the tournament tied for 53rd after shooting an overall score of (+11, 227). Junior Nick Mandel finished the tournament tied for 69th at (+14, 230), and sophomore Brian Mogg who finished with an overall score of (+17, 233) tied for 76th.

Senior Bhurinat Songpaiboon, who competed in this tournament as an individual, moved up seven spots in the final round, placing him tied for 42nd after finishing the tournament with an overall score of (+8, 224).

The Cougars look to improve in their next tournament at the scenic Chambers Bay Golf Course, where the Cougars will be competing in the Seattle U Redhawk Invitational, presented by OGIO, April 4-5.
