Swing and a miss: Cougars win one, drop two against Stanford

From staff reports

WSU secured their first Pac-12 game win under Head Coach Marty Lees, but lost the final two of three games against Stanford to lose the series this weekend.

The Cougars (8-14, 1-5) were outscored 11-1 in the final two games of the series against the Cardinal (12-6, 2-1) Friday and Saturday. Senior right-handed starter Ian Hamilton (0-6) had another up-and-down outing Friday, allowing six runs on nine hits over 7.1 innings while striking out nine.

Hamilton’s only run support came from redshirt sophomore center fielder Dugan Shirer in the top of the third. Freshman first baseman Mason Cerrillo scored when Shirer reached on an infield single to second, after he led off the inning with a single to right-center.

The Cardinal responded right back in the bottom of the third with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Stanford added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, sparked by a two-run home run by sophomore outfielder Brodey Quinn.

Saturday produced a similar outcome for the Cougar pitchers, who allowed a combined five runs on seven hits. Freshman right-handed starter Parker McFadden (2-2) gave up three runs in the bottom of the third while sophomore left-handed relief pitcher Scotty Sunitsch and redshirt sophomore Damon Jones allowed one run each.

Despite the loss, redshirt junior second baseman Trek Stemp added two hits Saturday – four hits during the series – to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

The Cougar second baseman has recorded at least one hit in each of his 20 starts this season.

WSU’s first Pac-12 win took extra innings to achieve. With the game tied entering the top of the 10th, the Cougars loaded the bases with one out for Cerrillo. The freshman first baseman singled to score Shirer and freshman short stop Justin Harrer, giving WSU a 4-2 lead.

Junior right fielder Cameron Frost executed a safety-squeeze bunt to score Stemp for the Cougars fifth and final run of the game.

The Cougars return to Bailey-Brayton Field Thursday to host Arizona State for a three-game series.
