Tennis, baseball and basketball are topics on Cougar Calls

From staff reports

Though some spring sports have already been in full swing for over a month, some are just getting on their feet. The start of spring also means the closing of a rollercoaster of a winter sports season.

WSU Director of Athletics Bill Moos’ radio show, Cougar Calls, Monday morning agenda ranged everywhere from basketball and tennis to the start of home baseball games.

Baseball falls to Utah Valley

The WSU baseball team played their first home games in Pullman this weekend against Utah Valley. The Cougars lost the first game on Thursday 8-0, but won the following day with a complete turnaround 10-1.

The Cougars hold two out of the five top hitters in the Pac-12 conference, including redshirt junior Trek Stemp who has been hitting over .400.

The Cougars will play another four home games this week against Northeastern starting on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.

Men head to Vegas, Women head back to Pullman

The women’s basketball team lost in their first and only game of the Pac-12 championship. The Cougars fell in a tight game against the USC Trojans by a mere four points, closing out the game with a 77-73 USC victory.

Freshman forward Borislava Hristova finished her season with a total of 466 points and was named both the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team as well as the All-Pac-12 team.

The Cougars are losing four seniors, however a common theme for Cougar athletics seems to be the youth and the talent that the younger players bring to the programs.

“We got to continue to work hard and recruit hard,” Moos said.

The men’s basketball team will travel to Las Vegas this week where they will take on the University of Colorado in their first game of the Pac-12 tournament.

The Buffalos will be a perfect matchup for the Cougars who they lost to by 5 points in Pullman this season and went into double overtime in Boulder. Moos put the losses on missed free throws, which had they been made by WSU the game would have been won.

Tennis drops to 13-3

The women’s tennis team had a tough weekend away from Pullman falling to both the UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans. The Cougars went into the weekend with only one loss, which was to Fresno State where they lost 4-3.

The team will continue on their six game stretch away from Pullman this weekend when they travel to Oregon to take on the Ducks on Friday and Portland on Sunday.
