WSU athletic director indicates Falk suffered concussion against Colorado

From staff reports

Although he kept his wording ambiguous, never using the word ‘concussion’ in direct relation to ‘Falk’, Washington State Director of Athletics Bill Moos did imply that the Cougars’ redshirt sophomore quarterback Luke Falk suffered a concussion during the game against Colorado Saturday.

During Moos’ weekly show on KXLY radio Monday, Moos said Falk is “doing really well.”

Falk was carted off of the field about eight minutes after he was apparently knocked unconscious after a sack mid-way through the third quarter. The replay cameras showed his head hitting the frozen turf hard. Falk was surrounding my medical personnel who removed his face mask before strapping him onto a backboard and taking him off of the field. He was able to lift his hands to encourage the crowd and give thumbs up.

Falk was later transported to Pullman Regional Hospital for further evaluation.

“It’s Coach (Mike) Leach’s policy not to talk about injuries, but there are policies from NCAA in regarding to concussions. We follow those to a T,” Moos said. “We’re hopeful he can play (in the Apple Cup) but we don’t know yet.”

During the first half of the UCLA game the previous week, Falk was hit hard and had to be helped off of the field by trainers. He was taken to the locker room but passed all concussion protocols. He was allowed to return to play for the second half.

Later on in the show, Moos again stressed WSU’s desire to take all precautions necessary in regard to Falk’s health.

“We’re not going to take a chance on a concussion. That’s the talk in major football college, NFL. There’s all the emphasis on head trauma. … We’re not going to mess with that,” Moos said.

As Moos said, Falk’s ability to play against Washington Friday is undetermined. If Falk is unable to play, redshirt freshman quarterback Peyton Bender will take his place. Bender has stepped in for Falk in both the UCLA and Colorado games. He threw for a combined 190 yards on 15 of 27 passing including two touchdowns and an interception over the last two games.

Falk has led the Cougars to a No. 20 ranking in the Associated Press and Coaches’ polls. He currently leads the nation in passing yards with 4,266 yards. He has thrown 36 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
