No fun in the sun for men’s golf

From staff reports

Never one to sugarcoat his team’s struggles, Washington State men’s golf Head Coach Garrett Clegg was blunt in assessing his varsity five’s performance after shooting 24-over par (312) in the second round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational Monday.

The Cougars sit in 15th place – there are 15 teams competing – with a two round score of +43 (619) as the third and final round is set to commence today at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Florida.

“We have 18 more holes and hopefully the worst is behind us,” Clegg said in a press release. “It’s a hard golf course, but other teams are competing well. We need to execute tomorrow and improve our final score.”

The Pac-12 has been well-represented through the first two rounds of play, with No. 30 California commanding a nine-stroke lead (569, -7) ahead of conference member No. 11 Arizona State and No. 1 Illinois (both at 578, +2). North Florida is in fourth place after two rounds (583, +7).

After shooting even-par for the first 18 holes on Sunday, sophomore Derek Bayley felt the course’s difficulty Monday, shooting 6-over (78) to bring his two-round score to 150 (+6). Bayley is in an eight-way tie for 36th, 13 strokes back of co-leaders Max Rotluff of Arizona State and Collin Morikawa of California (-7, 137).

Freshman AJ Armstrong shot 4-over (76) in the second round to move eight spots up the leaderboard. He shot three strokes better than his first round score of 7-over (79) to put himself in a tie for 60th (155, +11).

Sophomore Zach Anderson is tied for 65th with a two-round score of 156 (+12). Freshman Aaron Whalen is 14-over and has sole possession of 68th (158, +14). Junior and co-captain Nick Mandell resides in 75th with a total score of 162 (+18).

The tournament concludes today with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. Visit golfstat.com to follow the leaderboard.
