Day 2 unkind to Cougs

From staff reports

There’s a reason golf tournaments and invitationals are never single-round affairs, and Day 2 of the Saint Mary’s Invitational showed why.

In a day where the team and individual leaderboards did some major shuffling, the Washington State men’s golf team dipped from 3rd place all the way down to 9th after shooting a collective 20-over par (304) on Tuesday at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California.

“We are a young team and we need to learn how to keep our scores reasonable when things aren’t going our way,” said Head Coach Garrett Clegg. “Hopefully we learned a lot from today and will be ready to compete well tomorrow.”

Leader San Diego State put forth an impressive effort, carding a score of five-under (279) to overtake Day 1 leader Saint Mary’s by seven strokes. WSU trails Pac-12 schools Oregon State and Arizona by margins of 15 and 10 strokes , respectively, heading into the final round today. After two rounds of play, Oregon State is in third place at 11-over (579), and Arizona is in fifth place at 16-over (584).

The Cougars lead in-state rival Gonzaga (+30, 598) – which is tied for 11th with Santa Clara at 30-over (598) – by four strokes heading into the third and final round of play.

Despite carding two of the five Cougar birdies on the day, sophomore Derek Bayley dropped from second to ninth on the individual leaderboard after ending the round with a four-over (75), bringing his overall mark to one-over (143).

Senior Evan Omelia sits in a tie for 31st with a second round score of 75 (+4). The England native has totaled a two-round score of 148 (+6) entering round three.

Three Cougars shot six-over (77) in the second round. Sophomore Zach Anderson is tied for 40th place (+8, 150), while junior Nick Mandell is tied for 56th (+11, 153) and freshman Aaron Whalen is tied for 66th (+13, 155).
