Advocacy and sexual identity

From staff reports

Tomorrow night the queer community and allies are welcome to discuss the “B” in “LGBTQ.”

Speaker, educator and award-winning activist Robyn Ochs will discuss various topics, including sexual identity and her advocacy for people of all orientations and genders with a focus on the bisexual community as a part of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transexual Queer (LGBTQ) community.

ASWSU’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is hosting the event. GSA group members heard Ochs speak at a previous conference and really wanted her to speak at WSU as well said Taylor Bereiter, GSA chair, Senior, Creative writing major and queer studies minor.

“She will be talking about the dynamics of same sex relationships versus mixed sex,” she said. “And also talking about heterosexual privilege and things of that nature.”

“Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuals Around the World” was written by Ochs to raise awareness and share the stories of bisexuals from all over the globe about coming out, politics and relationships.

Her literary skills made her recognized as a Lambda Literary Award winner in 2015 for winning the Bisexual Book award in authors, anthology and non-fiction according to her website.

Ochs openness to the bisexual community has made her a Campus Pride favorite, an organization for campus groups and students to express themselves in an LGBTQ safe environment.

Ochs is considered in the Campus Pride’s top 25 favorite speakers according to her website.

Ochs will speak tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the CUB Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
