The WSU Board of Regents Student Regent Kassandra Vogel calls for more student involvement.
The Board of Regents is the university’s governing body that supervises, coordinates and regulates the WSU system.
The Board of Regents consists of 11 members, including one student regent. The current student regent is Kassandra Vogel, who wishes more students would apply to be student regents.
“A lot of the regents have been here for a lot longer. They have a lot of experience, not only on the board but in their life that I don’t have, but as a student, I also bring a perspective that’s unique and that’s different than theirs,” Vogel said.
As an undergraduate student, Vogel was involved in many on campus organizations that prepared her for this role. She took pride in her work as a Cougar Connector, Daily Evergreen reporter, ASWSU member and co-chair of the Student Experience subcommittee on WSU’s system-wide Sustainability Task Force.
According to WSU Insider, when applying for the Board of Regents, Vogel’s friends had a lack of understanding on what the organization does and who it is made up of.
Now, Vogel is a graduate student and the studen regent. As the student regent, spreading more awareness to the Board is something she wants to tackle, Vogel said.
Her plan is to meet with as many students as she can, visit all the WSU campuses and connect with as many members of WSU as possible.
“A lot of the times it can be really intimidating coming into these spaces, but just know that just because you’re not the most experienced in the room,” Vogel said. “That doesn’t mean that the point of view that you bring isn’t valuable.”
Applications open around February. She encourages all students to apply because the applicant pool is pretty small. Students can apply each year and have to answer a set of questions with references.
“I would just really love to see more students apply, and I think maybe the reason they don’t is just because they’re not aware of the opportunity,” Vogel said.
She encourages all students to reach out to her email [email protected] with any questions. Vogel wants to hear from as many students as possible.
