The WSU track and field team took a trip down south this weekend to Lubbock, Texas, home of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, to compete in the Matador Qualifier.

WSU only sent four athletes to represent the crimson and gray at this meet, and all of the athletes showed why they earned their spot.

Junior Charisma Taylor was the only WSU travel athlete to compete in two events, the 60-meter hurdles and the triple jump.

In the preliminary round of the women’s 60-meter hurdles, Taylor ran the best time in her heat, clocking in at 8.27 seconds.

She then followed up her blazing time with an even faster time of 8.16 seconds in the official round.

Not only was that Taylor’s personal best, but it is also a WSU all-time record, a record that she had set earlier in her career.

Her 60-meter hurdle time of 8.16 seconds is also a new record time for the Matador Qualifier. Needless to say, Taylor finished first in that event. She also finished first in the triple jump, recording a distance of 13.45 meters, which was also a meet record.

Taylor was the only female to compete on behalf of WSU, as the men’s team competed in the 60-meter hurdle and high jump.

Senior Sam Brixey collected yet another first-place finish in the men’s 60-meter hurdle, clocking in at 7.81 seconds.

Fellow senior Nick Johnson finished in second place, just behind the All-American Brixey with a time of 7.99 seconds.

Mitch Jacobson, a senior from Walla Walla, claimed second place in the high jump, leaping a season-best 2.12 meters.

After this dominant showing in Texas, the WSU indoor track and field squad will pay one last visit out west to the Washington Huskies. There, they will compete in the Husky Classic.

That meet will take place Feb. 25-27 at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.
