A comeback is on the way
October 3, 2013
It’s no secret that Robert Griffin III’s comeback, or lack thereof, has left Redskin fans disappointed. However, that disappointment comes from unmet expectations that were too high to start with.
It is unfair to say that RGIII is a disappointment because of the anticlimactic start to this year’s Redskin season, as it’s still early to know one way or the other.
After tearing his ACL for the second time in a playoff game against the Seahawks last year, Griffin has had a slow recovery process. The current situation is not ideal because Griffin is still in the recovery process, but it is not a death-sentence for this team’s season. He isn’t playing where he was before the injury, but there’s no doubt Griffin is progressing. He is using his legs more and more, which contributed to Redskin’s win over the Raiders last Sunday.
Over-hyping a Heisman winner is hard to avoid, but an injury affects every player differently. Griffin’s lack of an impacting comeback doesn’t mean he won’t get back his pre-injury caliber. It just might take more time than fans are ready for.
Griffin is incredibly talented, and with continuous progression and improvement will be the star QB as projected. Griffin’s struggle to get back to his original game is not unexpected.
“When you’re winning, you never talk about anything bad. But when you’re losing everything gets magnified,” said Pierre Garcon in an interview with usatoday.com.
“Coming off an ACL injury, we all know it was a tough thing to come back from. … If we were winning, we wouldn’t be talking about his knee. But we’re losing, (and) we’re talking about it.”
Griffin is under immense pressure to transform dramatically into his pre-injury self immediately. It will take time, but the Redskin’s recent win is a step in the right direction. It’s still too early to say whether RGIII or the Redskin’s 2013 season will end triumphant or flat, but progression and improvement are key pieces in turning it around.
