First time is the charm for WSU swimming
February 2, 2015
Cougar swimming entered uncharted waters in its first-ever match against Nebraska, defeating the Cornhuskers in a two-day dual meet this weekend, 214-158.
With this win, the Cougars (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) extend their winning streak to five matches and clinched the team’s best regular season record since 2012. The team also earned its second road win of the season after opening the season with back-to-back road losses.
On Friday, the Cougars got off to a rough start after getting disqualified in the 400-meter medley relay. The team would rebound quickly tough, earning all of the top-three spots in the 1650-meter freestyle event, with sophomore Kendra Griffin earning the victory.
The team’s younger competitors continued to shine when sophomore Elise Locke earned the top spot in the 200-meter butterfly event. Griffin, who led the team with 13 individual points, continued her impressive day with a second-place finish in the race.
Junior Presley Wetterstrom continued her record-breaking season with a victory in the 200-meter breaststroke event. Following the win, Wetterstrom earned second place in the 200-meter IM event, finishing just ahead of junior teammates Loree Olson and Shaya Schaedler.
WSU’s second relay team, led by seniors Nicole Proulx and Alison Mand, made amends for the team’s early mistake by closing the evening with a victory in the 400-meter freestyle relay race. The Cougars ended the day with a slim 75-73 lead over the Cornhuskers.
On Saturday, the team closed out the match by winning 10 of the 12 races to secure the victory. Wetterstrom led the way for the Cougars with 26 points, including a victory in the 400-meter IM event.
After a shaky performance the day before, the team opened Saturday with a big victory in the 200-meter medley relay race. Mand led the way for the Cougars before earning a top-finish of her own in the 50-meter backstroke event.
Freshman Rachel Thompson continued to demonstrate her speed with top finishes in the 200-meter and 500-meter freestyle events. As a team, the Cougars dominated the 500-meter freestyle race, earning four of the top-five spots.
Olson earned a top finish in the 100-meter backstroke event, with freshman Hannah Bruggman and sophomore Haley Rose Love finishing third and fourth respectively. Love would rebound in a big way with a victory in the 50-meter butterfly event.
The team concluded the meet on a bright note with a top finish in the 200-meter freestyle relay.
With the victory, the Cougars are above .500 for the first time since the 2010-11 season. The team also earned its fifth straight win for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
The Cougars will look to end their regular season on a bright note when they face Utah for senior night on Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. in Gibb Pool.
