Fifty shades of inspiration

From the pages of E.L James’ Fifty Shades of Grey is the world’s kinkiest billionaire, Christian Grey.

When it comes to sex, Mr. Grey invests in only the highest quality of erotic equipment. The money could have easily gone to UNICEF to feed hungry children, but the man needs to satisfy his sexual appetite first. Mr. Grey has his own multimillion-dollar sex dungeon filled with whips and Ben Wa balls. There is also a bed with carabineers on the ceiling specialized for binding. “The Playroom,” as Grey calls it, is a BDSM paradise.

Personally, it would be overwhelming if a guy showed me his secret Bat Cave of sex gadgets, but a greater fraction of the population would be into it. According to mental health expert Reef Karim of goodtherapy.org, “many people in society have hidden fantasies involving kink, S&M or altered sex behavior.” Karim also suggests that the novel opened up a lot of people to practice BDSM. In fact, forbes.com has reported that the release of Fifty Shades of Grey spiked sex toy sales quite significantly.

Fifty Shades of Grey may hold some truth, but a majority of it is highly unrealistic. In the book Grey requires his submissive partner, Anastasia Steele, to sign an agreement that requires her to follow several absurd requests, such as working out four days a week and only wearing what Grey allows her to wear.

“[The book] is thrilling and had my palms sweating, but is extremely unrealistic. What kind of man has you sign contracts before getting into bed with him?” said Sarah Koefod, a freshman hoping to major in communication and fashion.

While not all of us humble college students can drop big bucks at our local hardware store for bungee cords and materials to build the latest sex contraption, we can still be inspired by Fifty Shades of Grey to be adventurous in our sex lives.

BDSM is not reserved for the sexual elites- even us lowly college students can find creative ways to get in on the action. Pinterest has all the appeal of a real-life application in the DIY section- look bed-binding articles on craft sites, and make quality binds out of rubber bands and duct tape. Or substitute other small, round objects as Ben Wa balls. There is no end to your creative capacity.

Cosmopolitan.com features a very informative article called “How to Do All the Sex Positions from Fifty Shades of Grey” that instructs readers how to perform sex positions in the novel, like the Frisky Flip and The 50 Shades of Flogging.

Please be safe with the spanking though, or else your bottom will be fifty shades of red.
