The Washington State University men’s golf team is back in action this week in Akron, Ohio as they look to continue their sizzling start to the 2013-14 season.

The Cougars, fresh off their share of the Mark Simpson CU Invitational title two weeks earlier, are set to compete in the Firestone Invitational today and tomorrow, hosted by non-conference opponent University of Akron.

The tournament is held at the North Course of Firestone Country Club in Ohio and will feature a 17-team field from across the United States.

WSU looks to be a favorite heading into the week’s event after placing first in two of the team’s first three tournaments of the year. The Cougars locked in a dominant first-place finish in the team’s season opener in September at Palouse Ridge, aided by a tie-for-first in the Mark Simpson CU Invitational Sept. 23-24.

This week, the men’s golf team and Head Coach Garrett Clegg have their sights set on another tournament title.

“The guys are excited to test themselves after winning in Colorado,” Clegg said in a press release. “They understand that travelling all the way to Ohio and playing a course unfamiliar to our team will be difficult, but they are excited for the challenge.”

Sophomore Bhurinat Songpaiboon, juniors Michael Anderson and Charlie Mroz, redshirt junior Sang Lee and senior Blake Snyder and will represents the Cougars’ five-man lineup in the event.

“I think we have a good shot with this tournament,” Snyder said in a press release. “We looked at the field and see a lot of teams we haven’t played. It will be good for our confidence to play some unfamiliar teams.”

Making up the 17-team field are College of Charleston, Davidson, Eastern Michigan, Francis Marion, Georgetown, Illinois State, Kansas State, Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, Ohio, Old Dominion, Saint Mary’s, Samford, USC-Aiken, and Western Kentucky, along with Washington State and host-team Akron.

Play will begin Monday with the first two rounds of golf headed by a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (ET). The third and final round will begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (ET).
