Whitman County Coroner Annie Pillers announced her campaign for reelection Sunday after serving in the position since 2018.

Pillers said she made the decision privately to run for reelection shortly after she took office.

“I probably knew that I would want to continue this job for at least a second term,” Pillers said. “So I knew when I was appointed that I would want to run a couple of times. It’s really a privilege to work here.”

Pillers said she chose to seek reelection because helping her community through her job is rewarding.

“I’m very privileged to help sort out what has happened to family members on a personal level,” Pillers said. “It’s very important.”

Pillers was appointed to the position after the previous coroner resigned in February 2018. She became coroner shortly afterward and was elected to a full term in November of that year.

Among her acts as coroner, Pillers said she is proud of expanding access to suicide prevention programs and helping people who have recently lost loved ones.

“I think establishing that personal connection with the families and helping them to understand what has happened to their person and providing resources to them has been good,” Pillers said.

Pillers said the next step in the campaign process will be officially filing to run for office. This process will start in May and will last for about a week.

Pillers said she hopes to be reelected, although it may be too early to make predictions about the race at this point.

The election will take place on Nov. 8, along with other local and federal elections.
