WSU looks to snap seven-game losing streak

WSU baseball (9-14) heads to Provo, Utah, to take on the BYU Cougars (12-9) for a game at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Miller Park.
WSU is 9-2 all-time against BYU. The last time these two teams met was in 2014 in Pasco, where WSU lost 3-0 to BYU. WSU has a 6-0 home record against BYU and a 3-1 record in Provo.
The last time BYU took the field was a three-game series against then-ranked No. 19 Gonzaga where BYU lost two of three games. BYU’s only win was the first game of the series by a score of 11-2.
BYU started their season off by competing in the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The first game was a 3-2 loss to Indiana State, followed by a 6-3 loss to Marshall University. BYU answered a few hours later against Marshall University with a 3-2 win on the double-header day. The last game of the classic was a 9-6 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes.
BYU earned their first series sweep of 2022 against the Arizona State Sun Devils. Their largest win of the series was the final game, where the score was 19-3. BYU followed the Sun Devils sweep with a series win against University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, winning 2-3 games. The only loss was the second game of the series, which resulted in a 2-0 defeat. The first series loss for BYU was against Oklahoma State.
BYU then took on in-state rival Utah. BYU came out victorious winning the game 10-3. A series loss against conference opponent, Portland Pilots, gave BYU two more losses to their 2022 record, putting them in eighth place in the West Coast Conference.
BYU is led by Mitch McIntyre, who has 22 hits on 79 at-bats for a batting average of .278. He also has 15 RBIs on the season. Ryan Sepede leads BYU in RBIs with 26 and has 23 hits on the season.
Pitching for BYU is led by Jack Sterner with 37.2 innings pitched. Sterner has 29 strikeouts and has given up 42 hits and 13 runs for an ERA of 2.39.
WSU’s last time out was for an away series against the then-ranked No. 18 Stanford Cardinal. Stanford won the series against WSU, including an 8-7 victory in the 12th inning of the first game. WSU led 7-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth before Stanford tied the game and sent it to extras. Stanford won in the 12th inning on a walk-off walk.
WSU has lost their last seven games, including three against rival Washington Huskies and a series loss to Stanford. WSU has one win in conference play, putting them dead last in the Pac-12.
After the BYU game, WSU returns to Pullman for a three-game series against conference opponent Utah. The first game is set to start at 3:05 pm on Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
