OPINION: The best weed strains in Pullman
Purple Punch, Pineapple Express, Tangerine Dream, oh my!
April 13, 2022
This week, budtenders from local weed dispensaries weighed in on some of their personal favorite strains of weed.
Sam at We’re Just Buds, whose last name has been excluded for privacy, said his favorite strain is Tangerine Dream. It is an uplifting Sativa strain with energetic, creative, focused and happy effects.
“It’s a very social strain that doesn’t make you anxious,” Sam said.
He said it tastes like tangerines and sugar. This is because of its terpene profile, which characterizes the scent compounds in the buds. The terpene limonene gives Tangerine Dream its characteristic sweet citrus aroma.
Carlos Rojo, senior political science major and budtender at We’re Just Buds, has two favorites: Purple Punch and Pineapple Express. He said Pineapple Express is the name of a culturally important stoner movie that made the strain popular.
“Now that I look at it, I’m like wow, this is a very dumb movie,” Rojo said. “But back when we were younger, there was a hype around Pineapple Express being a unique strain.”
He said Pineapple Express is a citrusy Sativa strain. Purple Punch, on the other hand, is an herbal-tasting Indica strain that puts him to sleep.
“I was like, wow, this is very heavy-hitting. I can actually feel the difference between an Indica and a Sativa,” he said.
(For what it is worth, “Pineapple Express” is not a dumb movie.)
Two weed producers who were on-site at Peace of Mind Cannabis also wished to share their favorites.
One said he liked Thai Stick, a relaxing but active Sativa strain popular in the 1970s. Another said he likes Orange Dream, a cross between the classics Blue Dream and Orange Crush.
A certain research reporter at the Daily Evergreen who chose to remain anonymous (wink) said Blue Dream is their favorite strain. Blue Dream is a classic Sativa-hybrid strain with powerful, calm, creative and happy effects. Much like its parent strain Blueberry, the terpenes in Blue Dream smell and taste like blueberries.
There are so many strains of weed, with different breeding heritages, flavors and effects. While this variety is enjoyed by many, weed is still federally illegal. This generates great controversy as there are still people serving time in prison for crimes related to selling, buying and possessing weed.
“Support marijuana legalization,” Rojo said. “Not only that, we have to expunge criminal records.”
We should all be able to enjoy these great strains. Happy 4/20!
