As of Aug. 29, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 332 monkeypox cases in Washington, and an overall 48,844 cases worldwide.

Currently, California has the largest number of monkeypox in the U.S. reaching 3,291 cases.

In July, the World Health Organization declared monkeypox a public health emergency, and earlier this month the White House declared the virus a public health emergency.

The beginning spike of monkeypox escalated misinformation about the virus, finding that the public believed it was only spread among gay men.

According to the CDC, monkeypox can spread through close or intimate contact and is not limited to people of the LGTBQ+ community.

The main symptom of monkeypox is a rash found on the genitals, hands, feet, chest or mouth.

If you are concerned about monkeypox, visit the CDC website for more information on testing and prevention. Cougar Health Services is also providing virus testing on campus.
