March 9, 2023
Sam Brown, the transfer from University of Portland, got off to a decent start in the first two weeks on the road, but hit his stride in week three, hitting a home run in each of the Cougs’ first four home games.
Brown also has 10 RBIs in his last four games, putting his total on the season to 16, tied for highest on the team with Jonah Advincula and Elijah Hainline. He has had at least one RBI in seven of the 12 games so far. In three of those games he has had two RBIs, in one game he had a single RBI, and the other three games he has had three RBIs.
Safe to say the Cougs have been swinging the bat this season, generating 122 hits, which is top 100 in the country. They also have scored 117 runs, tied for 24th best.
For Brown, his third week on the Palouse was nothing short of spectacular, improving his batting average to .357 as he has 15 hits in 42 at-bats with four home runs and 16 RBIs. Brown has walked six times and has been hit by six pitches. He has also struck out nine times. His six hit by pitches are tied for 17th most in the nation.
The junior from Petaluma, California leads the Cougs in both home runs and runs scored, as well as being tied for the most times being hit by a pitch and the most RBIs on the team.
In his two years with the Portland Pilots, Brown totaled 11 home runs; he has four already not even a month into the season.
During his sophomore season with the Pilots, Brown appeared in 51 games and started 48 of them. He hit six homers and had 31 RBIs. Brown is already over halfway to his season totals from 2022 only 12 games into the season. Brown has started all 12 games so far this season for the Cougs, switching between first base and designated hitter.
In the series against Southern Indiana Brown went crazy. The first game on Friday saw Brown go 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. His home run was in the bottom of the first inning, which also scored Jacob McKeon to give WSU the early lead in their first home game of 2023.
Later in the bottom of the eighth inning, Brown would add another RBI to his total as he singled to right-center field, scoring Jake Harvey to extend the Cougs’ lead to 6-4 in the game.
In the second game against Southern Indiana, Brown would once again add three more RBIs to his season total. We had to wait until the bottom of the sixth inning in this game to get Brown on the board, but he produced a two-run homer, scoring McKeon again to give WSU a 7-3 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, he would single again for his second straight game with three RBIs and a two-run homer.
The final game against Southern Indiana Sunday saw Brown get an RBI in the bottom of the first inning and in the bottom of the fifth. His first-inning RBI was a sac fly which scored Advincula. In the fifth, he hit his first solo homer of the season and his third home run in three games.
The last game of the week was Tuesday against the Seattle U Redhawks. After going down 2-0 early in the second inning by way of a two-run homer, the Cougs bounced back with eight runs over the course of the game, two of which were helped by Brown.
Brown would earn his first RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Advincula scored on a Brown sac fly. One inning later Brown would hit his fourth home run in four games, this being a solo homer, his second straight game with a solo home run.
Look for Brown to continue his hot hitting streak as they head into Pac-12 Conference play this weekend where the Cougs face their toughest challenge yet as they travel to take on the Oregon State Beavers for a three-game series. The first pitch of the series is set for 5:35 p.m. Friday in Corvallis, Oregon.
