Looking to build off their record-setting start to 2023, the Cougs begin a four-match stretch in front of their home fans in Bohler Gym. The Cougs currently rank their highest in program history at No. 4 and are in the midst of their longest winning streak since 1997. Individuals are also breaking and on pace to break records, making 2023 the most historic season in WSU volleyball history.
No. 4 WSU (14-1, 4-0 Pac-12) looks to continue making history against Cal (12-3, 1-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in Bohler. The Cougs and Golden Bears only share a single opponent for the 2023 season, Arizona, with Cal playing the Wildcats at home and the Cougs on the road. Both teams came out victorious, but Cal finished off their win in four sets, while WSU took five sets to get the job done.
Cal hit .201% against the Wildcats and held them to a woeful .086%, while WSU hit. 277% and Arizona hit .212% against the Cougs. It was the worst performance from WSU in Conference play so far, but they still came out with the win, while Cal had an easier going to pick up their only Pac-12 win.
The two programs have met 73 times in their history, with Cal leading the series 44-29 despite recent WSU success against the Golden Bears. Despite an overwhelming deficit, the Cougs have defended their home court to the tune of a 20-17 record in Pullman. Under head coach Jen Greeny, WSU holds a 10-12 record against Cal, much better than what it had been before their current streak of wins.
Individually speaking, Magda Jehlárová, Karly Basham and Argentina Ung rank in the top five of the Pac-12 in certain statistical categories while Cal has just one representative in Tara DeSa with her Pac-12 leading 4.55 digs per set and 255 total digs.
Basham ranks third in digs per set and fourth in total digs, with 3.92 and 204, respectively. Jehlárová is also featured in two categories, leading the Pac-12 in hitting percentage at .447% and leading in blocks per set at 1.44. Finally, Ung is third in assists per set at 10.56.
Jehlárová has already broken career records for total blocks and block assists in WSU program history as well as the most weekly awards by any individual in Pac-12 player, but she is not the only player on record watch.
Pia Timmer is just 44.5 points from moving into second all-time in WSU history and 22 service aces away from having sole possession of the WSU program record. Julia Norville is 58 digs shy of breaking the impressive threshold of 1,000 digs in a career and finally, Jehlárová is 84 total blocks from becoming the all-time leader in Pac-12 history.
