Senators heard a summary of ASWSU activities for December from ASWSU President Luke Deschenes at this semester’s first meeting.
Deschenes said he attended a banquet hosted by the Black Women’s Caucus last month with Vice President Maccabee Werndorf, as well as the Moscow holiday parade with some senators.
Coug Day at the Capitol is also coming up Jan. 22, Deschenes said. This is an event hosted by ASWSU that allows students an opportunity to meet with Washington state legislators and lawmakers in Olympia to discuss legislative priorities for the school.
Werndorf said the current Legislative Affairs Director, Collin Bannister, who also works for The Daily Evergreen, is already in Olympia and is lobbying for ASWSU’s legislative agenda.
Elections for executive board positions, including the positions of ASWSU president and vice president will be coming up soon as well, Deschenes said. The declaration of candidacy period for any interested applicants will open on Jan. 22.
Deschenes requested ASWSU senators to encourage their peers and other members of ASWSU to run for senate seats.
“You all do have a lot of influence in your position right now and the ability to encourage people to fill these positions and ensure the longevity of ASWSU,” he said.
Deschenes also announced there is now a new vice chancellor of student affairs, Romando Nash, whom he and Werndorf will be working with before their departure from ASWSU this May.
ASWSU meets at 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday in CUB 204.
