The WSU track and field team saw a combined total of 13 PRs during its final weekend of the regular indoor season at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite Feb. 23–24 in Seattle.
For two athletes, however, the indoor season continues. It was announced Tuesday that freshman Eva Lowder and graduate student Mason Mahacek both qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will be held at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston March 8–9.
Lowder, who has consistently taken the top spot in the women’s pole vault and set countless PRs so far in 2024, took 2nd with a PR of 4.38m (14′ 4.5″) last weekend. This performance places her in a tie for No. 13 in the nation and breaks a 22-year-old WSU program record.
Transferring to WSU from Michigan, Mahacek has brought with him experience and grit. He set a WSU school record at 5,762 points at the NM Collegiate Classic Feb. 2-3. Mahacek’s appearance at Nations will mark the first for WSU in the men’s heptathlon. Mahacek finished 13th with 5,070 points Saturday, taking PRs in the 60-meter (7.02) and the high jump (2.04m/6′ 8.25).
Other highlights of the weekend include Zenah Cheptoo’s performance in the women’s 3,000-meter. The freshman distance runner broke her own previous school record – of which she’s now done three times – for a second-place finish of 8:56.15.
Micaela De Mello also impressed with her 2nd-place finish in the women’s 60-meter hurdles final. At 8.13, De Mello set a new career best, sits at No. 2 all-time at WSU and is tied for 12th in the NCAA.
Lowder is scheduled to compete in the women’s pole vault at 3 p.m. March 8, while Mahacek’s heptathlon events are slated for March 8 and 9. Fans can follow along via the NCAA’s website.
For the rest of the team, the outdoor track and field season picks up in two weeks. The Cougs will take to the March 15–16 Arizona Spring Break Fiesta in Tucson, Arizona, and the Sam Adams Classic March 16 in Spokane.
