Teams that dropped: Utah
There were no upsets this week, so nobody dropped significantly, but Utah’s poor performance in Logan with backup quarterback Isaac Wilson gives me doubt, especially since Rising is already fighting injuries this early in the season. The Utes only dropped a few spots.
Biggest Risers: Oklahoma
The Sooners looked better in their matchup against Tulane than Kansas State did. Quarterback Jackson Arnold shows potential heading into SEC play against a tough conference schedule.
Newcomers: UNLV, Illinois and Memphis
UNLV has the highest potential of all Group of Five teams and has exceeded expectations so far this season.
Illinois is one of the biggest surprises of the early season. Quarterback Luke Altmeyer has been playing the best football of his career, throwing for 647 yards, a 70% completion rate and six touchdowns. Senior Zakhari Franklin looks like the same guy who was at UTSA. This is another one of Bret Bielema’s great head coaching jobs.
Memphis did not look as good against Florida State as I thought they would. They have games against Tulane and South Florida in the conference, but not much to make a statement for the GO5 playoff spot.
Washington State just missed the top 25, ranked 27th in my rankings, right behind Texas A&M.
