Sorry Coug fans. This week Wazzu moves up one spot to 26th, but after giving up over 50 points to San Jose State, they do not look like a top 25 team. The good news is that Boise State is a formidable opponent and beating them on the Smurf Turf would be a big enough win to launch Washington State into the top 25.
Teams that dropped: Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
Boy was it a bad day for college football in the state of Oklahoma on Saturday. Both the Sooners and the Cowboys did not show any hope on offense, both benching their starting quarterback. Redshirt Freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. sparked the offense for Oklahoma and could be the answer for the Sooners at quarterback while Redshirt Sophomore Garret Rangel was somehow worse than starter Alan Bowman for the Pokes.Â
That’s without even mentioning the power cats yet. Kansas State was doing what they wanted their first two drives down the field. Both of those drives finished in field goals due to the offensive line shooting themselves in the foot with pre-snap penalties. K-State could not put the ball into the end zone to save their lives while BYU found the end zone in all three facets of the game.
Biggest Risers: Michigan, Clemson
Michigan rose from the dead to beat USC, while only throwing for 32 yards. Running the ball helped the Wolverine defense get needed rest to slow down the prolific Trojan offense.Â
Clemson has done a great job rebounding from an embarrassing start to the season against Georgia. The Tigers have not faced a challenging opponent since, but they are looking every bit of the team people expected they would be in the preseason.
Newcomers: BYU and Boise State
BYU looked really good for a team facing injuries at the running back position. The impressive part was they did it on offense, defense, and special teams. The Cougars will be a fun team to keep an eye on the rest of the way.
Boise State and UNLV have separated themselves from the rest of the pack for the Group of Five playoff spot. Both teams are very talented, but if Spencer Danielson can rally the troops, no one is nearly as talented as the Broncos in the Group of Five.
