Alice Johansson tied for the lead in the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, marking her second win in as many tournaments.
The Ptarmigan Ram Classic, hosted by Colorado State University, did not go as well for the team, who finished in 11th place, worst among the teams competing.
Johansson started the tournament with a three-under first round, but took things up a notch in the second round, which saw her lead the field with a score of seven-under. She entered the final round in the lead, and barely managed to fend off Abigail Leighton of UC Davis for the co-victory. Leighton scored six-under in round three, good enough to tie Johansson at 11-under-par, which was their overall score.
Johansson’s final score sets a new WSU record, as the best 54-hole score in program history. Johansson is familiar with making WSU history; she recently became the first golfer since 2020 to win an individual title, when she won the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational on Sept. 10.
“It was great to see Alice have back-to-back wins and continue her awesome play,” said head coach Kevin Tucker.
Sara Pineros put together the next best score for the Cougs, at 14-over-par. She improved in each round, going from eight-over, to four-over, and then finishing with a two-over final round.
Similarly, Agnes Brink also improved in each round. The WSU freshman out of Helsingborg, Sweden started slow, with a score of eight-over in round one. But she improved to five-over in round two and four-over in the final round, giving her a total score of 17-over.
Senior Madelyn Gamble finished with the highest score among the Cougs, finishing at 20-over-par.
Tucker believes the team showed good improvement throughout the tournament despite their last-place finish, as WSU had the sixth-best score in round three.
“Our team improved each round and we were close to putting it together today,” said Tucker.
The WSU women’s golf team will next compete at The Molly, hosted by Cal Berkely, on Sept. 30
