Thousands of Verizon users could not use their mobile phone services due to a technical issue Monday.
Verizon said in a statement that they are aware of the issue and their engineers are working on identifying a way to solve the problem.
“We are working to determine the cause and extent of these service disruptions,” Verizon said.
DownDetector showed there have been more than 100,000 outage reports on Monday. However, by noon that number had begun to decline, though at the moment it is unclear what caused the issue.
WSU students are among those affected by the outage. Senior psychology major Elizabeth Villalovoz said she first noticed the problem when trying to call people resulted in a delay.
“When a work emergency comes up since I’m a manager for a job on campus, it makes it harder for me to connect with my employees right away unless I get wifi,” Villalovoz said.
Villalovoz said she first noticed the issue around 10 a.m., but by 3 p.m., the outage was mostly resolved for her. She first became aware it was not just her phone having problems when some of her coworkers confirmed they were experiencing the same issues.
“That’s how I knew it wasn’t just a singular problem,” she said. “I didn’t know even at first either until this morning when I was actually on campus because I didn’t use my phone walking to campus.”
Villalovoz said she has not seen any message from Verizon on the situation. She hopes they will address it at some point.
“It wasn’t until I started sending text messages or when I tried to look up certain things that I realized there was a delay,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to ask other people if they’re having the same problems.”
The FCC announced it would work to determine the cause of the disruptions, according to USA Today. Verizon was able to fully resolve the issue by the end of the day.
“Service has returned to normal levels,” Verizon said in a statement on Twitter. “If you are still having issues, we recommend restarting your device.”
