Sam Renner has won the Badger Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin with a score of nine-under par, helping the Cougs to a team finish of fourth place.
A total of sixteen schools began play at Madison, Wis on Sept. 29. After day one, the Cougs were in fifth place. Renner led the way at three under, with sophomore Ben Borgida also shooting one-under-par. Freshman Dylan Burcham shot a competitive one-over on day one, putting him in third for the Cougars.
WSU remained in fifth after day two, as Renner shot five-under and moved into second place. Borgida shot one-under for the second straight day, and grad student Jakob Chicoyne bounced back from a three-over first round to a one-under second round. Burcham shot four-over on day two, and fellow freshman Garrett Harrison shot three-over, improving from a five-over first round.
In the final round, Renner shot one-under, which was good enough to capture the individual title, as he moved ahead of Wisconsin’s William Harned. Harned shot three-over and blew his chance at victory.
For the junior, it marks his first individual win, and WSU’s first program win since Pono Yanagi tied for first place at the Golfweek Fall Challenge in 2023.
The Cougars as a team finished in fourth place overall. Borgida finished in 21st overall, shooting a four-over in round three to finish at two-over overall. Chicoyne finished 32nd at five-over, while Burcham finished at nine-over and Harrison shot 13-over.
Northern Illinois won the tournament with a combined score of nine-under. Wisconsin and Long Beach State finished in a tie for second place at six-under.
The Cougars next travel to Corvallis for the Oregon State Invitational on Oct. 7.
