This week, Sam Renner is Unsung Coug of the Week after his win at the Badger Invitational. Renner shot nine-under to win his first collegiate tournament and the Cougar’s first men’s golf victory in a year.
Renner is a junior who hails from Bend, Oregon. He attended Summit High School, where he won six tournaments. He also played in the Future Champions Golf Tour, and never finished below sixth place.
As a freshman, he played in ten tournaments and improved quickly. His first-round score of seven-under in the 2023 Pac-12 Championship was a program record for a single-round score at that tournament. He averaged 72.9 as a freshman and finished in the top 10 twice. He was also the best freshman finisher at the Pac-12 Championship.
Renner continued to improve as a sophomore in the 2023-24 season. He posted 27 rounds of par or under-par golf, leading the team. He also led the team with five top-1o finishes and was second with an average score of 71.19.
Renner’s previous best finish was a second-place finish at the 2024 National Golf Invitational. There, he shot a score of 14-under, the second-best score in program history.
Now as a junior, Renner is the team’s top golfer, and he has lived up to the billing, delivering the first win for the program all season.
