With just eight opponents on the docket for 2025, WSU announced Friday a home-and-home series with the University of Toledo Rockets. The Cougs and Rockets will face off next season and in 2031.
The first contest will be Oct. 25, 2025, at Gesa Field in Pullman, with the second matchup coming Sept. 20, 2031, in Toledo, Ohio. WSU and Toledo have never faced each other previously.
Wazzu has faced just two Mid-American Conference foes all-time, previously dueling Central Michigan in the 2021 Sun Bowl and Ball State in the 1984 regular season.
WSU’s 2025 schedule now features three Power 4 schools, one Pac-12 opponent, four Group of 5 opponents and one FCS opponent, combining for a 35-22 record through seven weeks in 2024, and just one record below .500.
Toledo Rockets football began in 1917 and has played at its home stadium, the Glass Bowl, since 1936. The Rockets possess an all-time record of 580-452-24.
Toledo may be in the Group of 5 but it is no pushover. The Rockets have a record of 69-37 since 2015 under head coach Jason Candle, including seven bowl appearances and two MAC Championships.
Candle has never fielded a squad with a losing record at Toledo, only missing bowl games in 2019 due to not enough bowl spots, and 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Rockets also have a win this season over an SEC opponent in Mississippi State, which they defeated 41-17 on the road.
Toledo has seen 81 former players get to the NFL, and 66 have been drafted. Most notably cornerback Quinyon Mitchell was taken in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 22nd overall pick, one of two first-round picks from Toledo all-time.
Other notable Rockets in the NFL are wide receiver Diontae Johnson of the Carolina Panthers and running back Kareem Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs.
With the addition of a ninth opponent in the Toledo Rockets, Cougar home and away opponents for 2025 are as follows.
Home: Idaho, San Diego State, Louisiana Tech, Washington, Oregon State and Toledo.
Away: Ole Miss, North Texas and Virginia.
