The WSU women’s golf team had a historically strong performance on day two of the Clash at Boulder Creek Oct. 21. The team entered the day in eighth place, but fired off a program record eight-under-par as a team, to move into fourth place overall.
The WSU record for the lowest team score in a single round is eight below par, which was previously set in 2007 at the same course during the UNLV Spring Rebel Invite.
Senior Madelyn Gamble built off her strong performance on day one, firing four birdies and scoring three below par, giving her a total score of five under through two rounds. She will enter day three in tenth place, which would be her highest finish all season.
“Maddie (Gamble) has found her groove again,” said coach Kevin Tucker.
Freshman Grace Rubelsky notched a career-high six birdies and finished the day with a career-best score of three-under-par. She brought her total score to even, placing her in a tie for 27th overall.
Sarah Skovgaard Bils joined in the fun, sinking five birdies as part of a two-under day. The senior from Denmark also ranks 27th overall, with a total score of even par.
Alice Johansson followed up her two-under first round with an even-par in round two. She will enter day three in a tie for 19th place, at two-under.
Sara Pineros also improved from her first-round score of two-over par. The sophomore shot one-over, raising her total score to three-over, good for 45th place.
“We showed a lot of maturity today with our decision-making and finished strong with three birdies in our last two holes,” Tucker told WSU athletics media.
The Cougars will enter the final round 18 strokes behind the University of San Francisco, who are running away with first place. However, the battle for a top-three finish is very much alive for Wazzu, who is only two strokes behind Boise State for third.
