The Student Entertainment Board partnered with STAGE Student Theater to host a haunted house last Friday evening.
The Compton Union Building senior ballroom was adorned with creepy decorations that enhanced the thrilling atmosphere. With the lights off and strobe lights illuminating the space, the event exuded spine-tingling vibes.
As attendees entered the mysterious senior ballroom, they were greeted by ominous strobe lights and the sounds of screams from the haunted house. Actors dressed as zombies, clowns and other eerie characters added a haunting effect to the event. Scare actors roamed the room, scaring unsuspecting guests and providing an interactive element for those waiting in line.
Junior psychology major Carden Skoubo attended the haunted house with friends and enjoyed the event.
“I love Halloween; it’s my favorite holiday,” Skoubo said.
This was his first haunted house experience and he praised the atmosphere. He said his favorite part was exploring different rooms with unexpected characters. He got a little scared while anticipating jump scares but overall enjoyed the experience. After every corner turned inside the haunted house, there was a terrifying encounter.
Dozens of people lined up 30 minutes before the event started, making the haunted house a clear fan favorite. At one point, the line extended out the doors of the CUB, attracting community members, students and families.
The Week of Welcome is planned at the start of summer and the haunted house planning begins immediately after WOW concludes, said Cody Moehl, executive director of SEB and a business management major.
“If you want to go into event management and expand your network and knowledge, it’s very important,” Moehl said. “It’s been amazing for me because I want to get into event management.”
Moehl said SEB provides opportunities for real-world experience in event planning. He manages people in SEB, which has improved his management skills.
“It’s really helped my networking and public speaking,” he said.
Moehl recommends joining SEB for hands-on experience in event management and planning.
“It’s great real-world event experience,” he said.
SEB is always looking for more members to join their committee, with paid positions opening in the second semester.
If you missed the haunted house, SEB is planning more eerie events before Halloween. At 7 p.m. this Friday, Big River Paranormal will speak in the CUB Auditorium about the paranormal investigation process.
During Halloween week, SEB will host showings of classic horror films. Monday’s Movie Madness on Oct. 28 will feature “Hocus Pocus.” On Oct. 29, “A Quiet Place” will be shown, followed by “It” on Oct. 30 and “Hereditary” on Halloween.
Each movie will have two showings at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., providing opportunities to catch one or all of the films. The event is free for WSU students and $5 for non-WSU students. SEB will provide free snacks, including popcorn and soda. All events will take place in the CUB Auditorium.
