Residents in the over 100-year-old McCroskey Hall know it’s haunted. At night windows weep and writhe, residents report hearing stomping and knocking in the early hours of the morning and one resident even reported being nearly pushed by an unseen force.

McCroskey residents have a name for this force: Susan B. Anthony.

Residents say she’s harmless, if you treat her with kindness. She is said to reside in a decomissioned meat locker in the basement of McCroskey.

Eva Sheffler, a senior resident advisor at McCroskey, said when resident advisors are doing rounds, they must greet and say goodbye to her. The consequences can be disastrous if they don’t.

“I wouldn’t want to find out what happens if you disrespect Susan B. Anthony’s ghost,” Sheffler said.

The origins of the legend remain unknown. However, residents said people started talking about her two years ago, though it might have gone on before that.

Shrouded in even more mystery is the basement meat locker, where Susan B. Anthony is said to reside.

McCroskey once had a dining hall in the basement where staff cooked for residents. Apart from the dining hall rests a meat locker that remains shut and locked since McCroskey’s 2012 renovation. No one has entered it since.

Sheffler said this is where the ghost of Susan B. Anthony lives. Due to the cold environment, it is the perfect place for a ghost.

The legend of Susan B. Anthony’s ghost is popular among the residents.

“I feel like she’s an icon,” one former resident said.

Sheffler said the reason the legend resonates with so many residents is because Susan B. Anthony’s life and work can be compared to the goal of McCroskey Hall.

“McCroskey Hall is the first fully gender inclusive dorm. It’s all about equality, making things safe and livable, and equal rights,” Sheffler said. “Susan B. Anthony was sort of a pioneer in that field.”
