The fall season is over for WSU men’s golf, which saw the team complete five tournaments, finish with a high score of fourth place and claim two individual wins, both from junior Sam Renner.
The season began at home with the Palouse Invitational, in which the Cougars finished fourth. The Cougs got off to a hot start on their home course and appeared like they were pacing for a third-place finish, but were surpassed by Oregon State during the final round. Still, they were among the top third of teams and had a lot to be excited about after their first tournament.
The next week WSU traveled to Toronto for the Canadian Collegiate Invitational. The tournament proved challenging for the Cougs, who finished in seventh place with a team score of 17 over par. They did climb their way out of a potential last-place finish with a strong final round, led by sophomore Ben Borgida, who shot a career-best six-under on day two.
At the end of September, the Cougars competed in the Wisconsin Badger Invitational, the first of two straight individual wins for Renner. He posted a combined score of nine-under par, helping him become the fourth golfer under head coach Dustin White to capture an invitational title. He entered the final round two strokes behind the leader, but a strong finish helped him to capture his first individual title. The Cougs finished that tournament tied for fourth as a team.
A week later in Corvallis, Oregon, Renner did it again. He came from behind for the second straight week to win back-to-back victories, this time with a score of eight-under-par. He became the fifth WSU golfer to win multiple tournaments, but the first to win both in the same season. The rest of the Cougars struggled in the Oregon State Invitational, finishing seventh as a team.
The Cougs final tournament of the year was the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational. The Cougars finished in fifth, well behind the winning San Diego Toreros. Freshman Dylan Burcham led the Cougs in their final tournament with a career-best score of six-under-par.
WSU has yet to release its spring schedule, so for now, the Cougs will take time to rest, relax and recuperate over the winter months before getting back into competition in February.
