The WSU women’s golf team has completed their fall season. They competed in four tournaments, with a team-best score of sixth, and two individual wins, both from sophomore Alice Johnasson.
Johansson got the team off to a great start, winning the team’s opening tournament in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The sophomore dominated the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, which honors the late coach of the University of Kentucky women’s golf team, winning with a score of four-under-par, who won with a score of four-under-par. The team finished sixth overall in their season opener.
Johansson made more history later in September at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado. She became the first women’s golfer in WSU history to win back-t0-back tournaments, this time with a score of 11-under-par. She tied Abigail Leighton of UC Davis for the individual win. However, her historic victory was not enough to lift the Cougs out of the basement, as they finished in 11th place out of as many teams.
Next, the Cougars took on the Molly, a tournament hosted every year by UC Berkley. Playing at a course near the Pacific Ocean, at Seaside, California, the Cougars may have fallen victim to the wind, which they don’t have to deal with as much in Pullman. They again finished last place as a team. Individually, Sarah Bils made a run at the top ten, but a rough final round slid her to 21st, with her score of five-over-par leading the Cougs.
Finally, WSU went to Nevada for the Clash at Boulder Creek, hosted by UNLV. The Cougars showed improvement as a team from their previous two tournaments, finishing sixth of 17 teams. Individually, senior Madelyn Gamble led the way with a score of five-under-par, her best finish of the season to that point.
The Cougs will return to action on Feb. 23 at Peoria, Arizona for the Westbrook Invitational. They will take the next three months to practice and rest before a spring season that includes five more tournaments.
