Republican Micheal Baumgartner is projected to defeat Democrat Carmela Conroy in congressional district 5.
Baumgartner received 59.9% of the vote, as of 2:50 p.m. Wednesday. Conroy only received 40.1% of votes
District 5 covers most of Eastern Washington, including Pullman.
Baumgartner is replacing Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who announced her retirement early February and has held the seat for nearly 20 years.
“I salute her for stepping forward to run for office,” Baumgartner said in his victory speech Tuesday night. “She did wonderful service to our country, and I thought she ran a great campaign. So, hats off to Carmela, be very proud of the race you ran.”
Conroy said that she plans to run for the seat again in 2026.
