James Dawson of the NPR podcast “Extremely American” will visit WSU on Thursday, Nov. 14.
Hosted by the Murrow College of Communication, the events with Dawson will be a continuation of their Religion Reporting Project. Dawson will be present in various classes throughout the week and will discuss his experiences and share advice with students, said Associate Professor Tracy Simmons.
“Coaxing the Truth: Navigating Reluctant Sources and Tough Investigations in Podcasting,” is the first event of the day Thursday. It will be held in Jackson Hall Studio A at 9:10 a.m.
Dawson will be joined by Heath Druzin from Boise State Public Radio, as well as Anna King and Mary Ellen Pitney from Northwest Public Broadcasting, Simmons said. The panel will be moderated by Simmons and will discuss the reporters’ experiences getting information from hesitant sources on sensitive issues.
At 10:35 a.m. in Studio A, King will lead an interview with Dawson, which will be streamed live on NWPB, Simmons said. The two will discuss the intricacies and difficulties of talking to extremist Americans and his experiences.
These events are open to all students and can be attended via Zoom or in person, Simmons said. Students have the opportunity to witness journalism in real time and be a part of a live studio audience.
There is no RSVP necessary, but seating is limited in the Studio. Any questions can be directed to Tracy Simmons.
