The Cougars take on the Fresno State Bulldogs at the Acrisure Holiday Invitational at the Acrisure Arena in Thousand Palms, Calif. on Nov. 26.
The game tips off at 9 p.m. It is a four-team tournament featuring Washington State, Fresno State, Southern Methodist, and Cal Baptist.
SMU (4-2) is the favorite to win the tournament, ranked No. 66 on Kenpom. Washington State (5-1) is ranked 20 spots behind them, at No. 86. They’ll first have to get through their first-round opponents. The Cougs play Fresno State (3-2, No. 265) while SMU takes on Cal Baptist (4-2, No. 174).
Should Washington State win the tournament, they will continue to boost their resume with what would be their second win among teams in the top 100, their first being against Bradley (6-1). A win at a neutral site over SMU would count as a Quad-2 victory.
Wazzu has been playing well lately, with their latest win being a dominant neutral-site win over Eastern WA in which the Cougs shot 53.3% (16-30) from the three-point line. WSU has shown the ability to be a strong shooting team this year, but hopes to be a multi-dimensional offense to avoid being a team that lives and dies by the three.
This is the second rendition of the Acrisure Holiday Invitational. Last year’s inaugural event was won by Hawaii, who defeated San Diego in the finals.
If WSU reaches the finals it will be played tomorrow night, Nov. 27. If they lose, they will play for third place on Nov. 27.
According to ESPNBet, WSU is favored by 12.5 points to beat Fresno State. They are given a 90.5% chance to win by the ESPN matchup predictor.
