It was reported this morning that Wake Forest University will be hiring former WSU head football coach Jake Dickert to be their new head football coach. The destruction of the WSU football team is complete.
The Wake Forest job opened up Monday when their 11-year coach Dave Clawson unexpectedly stepped down. Dickert will now fill his shoes.
Wake Forest has never been a powerhouse program, but they are in the ACC, and will offer Dickert more stability as a member of a Power conference.
Rumors of Dickert’s departure began late last night, spurned by an Athletic article mentioning him as a potential candidate. A Â flight tracker confirmed that there was a flight departing Pullman for Winston-Salem, North Carolina at 10:40 a.m. today, which could really only mean one thing.
With Dickert gone, WSU will likely lose the few coaches and players remaining in the program. Players and new commits tend to follow the coach that recruited them, and Dickert will likely build a staff at Wake Forest that could include some of his current assistants.
The move is particularly gutting to Cougar fans because Dickert never mentioned being interested in any other jobs.
At WSU Dickert went 23-20, with two winning seasons. He was 0-2 in bowl games, but was 2-2 in Apple Cups, which helped earn the praise of Coug fans.
Despite WSU being down their head coach, both coordinators, their QB and RB coaches and 22 players (10 starters) in the portal, the Cougars are still slated to play Syracuse in San Diego on Dec. 27th in the Holiday Bowl.
