With Jake Dickert heading to Wake Forest today, here are four coaches that could be phenomenal candidates to replace Dickert:
Jeff Choate:
Choate spent the last two seasons as the head coach for the University of Nevada, going 3-10 this season and 0-7 in Mountain West conference play. Choate has ties to the region as he coached on Mike Leach’s WSU staff in 2012 as a linebackers coach and graduated from Saint Maries High School of the nearby Saint Maries, Idaho in 1988.
Dirk Koetter:
Koetter is an Idaho local and a longtime Boise State guy, having previously served as the Broncos head coach from 1998 to 2000. Koetter is currently the offensive coordinator for the team after spending time in the NFL as an offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Koetter has NFL head coaching experience as well, having served as the head man for the Buccaneers in 2017 and 2018, but was ultimately fired after going 10-22 as the head coach.
Brent Vigen:
Vigen started his career with longtime Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl and he has spent the last four seasons as the head coach at Montana State. Since 2021, Vigen has had a 46-9 record with the Bobcats and currently has the team in the FCS playoff semifinals. Vigen called plays for Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen when he was in college at Wyoming.
Wildcard: Brennan Marion:
Marion spent the last two seasons with the University of Nevada Las Vegas and has been credited heavily with the Rebels’ explosive offensive, which Marion dubbed the “go-go” offense. Marion has allegedly been talking with Sacramento State about becoming their head coach, but one would imagine the opening at Wazzu would be immensely more attractive if the athletic department were to reach out to Marion.
