WSU star forward Cedric Coward and guard Marcus Wilson are out for the season, and both Isaiah Watts and Rihard Vavers are also out with injuries, according to head coach David Riley.
“Cedric got surgery this week down in LA,” said Riley. “He’ll be out four to six months on the shoulder.”
Losing Coward is a major blow for the Cougs. He was named to the WCC preseason team and was expected to be the Cougars best player in the 2024-25 season. He was averaging over 15 points a game before his injury. Isaiah Watts replaces him in the starting lineup.
“Unfortunately Marcus Wilson also got surgery this week,” Riley confirmed. “He’ll be out four to six months on the shoulder.“
Wilson, a freshman, was just beginning to break out. He was expected to be the Cougs backup point guard behind Nate Calmese, but that role will now be filled by redshirt freshman Parker Gerrits.
“Rihard Vavers will be out for most likely the year,” said Riley. Vavers “broke bones in each hand.”
Vavers injury came after scoring a career high nine points against Nevada. He played a key role in the Cougs road win against the Wolfpack.
“Those are three amazing players, amazing people,” said Riley. “They can help coach, they can help with the practices, and they’ll still be a part of our team.”
Isaiah Watts is also out with an apparent injury in his left forearm, although the diagnosis and length of injury has not been confirmed. The Cougars are currently down to eight scholarship players remaining on the team, including freshman Tomas Thrastarson, Kase Wynott and Parker Gerrits.
Despite the injuries, they are a bubble team for the NCAA tournament after handling a difficult non-conference schedule and going 10-3.
