According to a report from On3sports on Saturday, South Dakota State running back Angel Johnson will trade the blue and yellow for the crimson and gray next fall.
Johnson is set to follow his former head coach at SDSU, Jimmy Rogers, who left SDSU in December to take the same role at WSU. He was heavily coveted, with a reported offer from Tennessee. Johnson rushed for 646 yards on 91 carries last year, and has scored nine career touchdowns. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
The recruiting win over Tennessee is a big win for the Cougs, who are used to being on the losing end of the transfer portal process. Of course, having Rogers in-house certainly helped with the recruiting of his former back.
Kirby Vorhees and Maxwell Woods, two more backs from SDSU, will also join Johnson and Rogers on the Palouse.
Vorhees, a redshirt freshman, totaled 581 yards and eight touchdowns, while Woods, a freshman, finished with 176 yards and a touchdown.
The three backs helped the 2024 SDSU team reach an FCS playoff semifinal game. The trio of backs worked as a unit, with Johnson and Vorhees splitting the bulk of the carries.
Johnson, Vorhees and Woods now join the current Coug backfield, which also includes Leo Pulalasi, Djouvensky Schlenbaker, Dylan Paine and Josh Joyner.
