WSU’s Student Entertainment Board has organized a special double event for students at the end of the month– a Roaring ’20s Casino Night and a speakeasy.
The events are free and will be held at the Compton Union Building on Friday.
Students can win prizes including a television, a speaker, a record player and more while playing classics including poker, blackjack and roulette. Mocktails and finger foods will also be provided.
The speakeasy event will be open to students 21 and older on the same night, downstairs at the Reunion Cafe. Students, with valid photo ID, can enjoy beer and wine with soda and water available to non-drinkers. Food will also be provided—charcuterie boards and finger sandwiches to fully encompass the feel of a casino night.
SEB has also planned a photo booth and suggested attendees should show up in costume, something that shouts glitz and glam from the roaring ’20s. Three prizes for best costume will be awarded at the event, giving students an extra 10-15 ticket entries in the prize draw.
Karaoke will be available in the Junior Ballroom for students to entertain themselves while waiting on the prize draw or to take a break from the casino.
The Up All Night programmer, Katrina O’Dell, said this is the second ever double event, yet the first one that was planned ahead of time.
“We had done the casino night and the speakeasy last year; however, I think that this year it is a lot better promoted and marketed. Last year it was kind of a last-minute idea to do the speakeasy,” she said.
Despite short notice, the speakeasy still boasted a great turnout, so O’Dell is hoping that even more students will participate this year.
Alongside bringing students back to campus, O’Dell believes that the casino night will provide a space for older students to kick back and relax, since many events are focused on freshmen.
“I think that the idea behind the casino night was to hopefully get more adult students to come out to enjoy a more mature and laid-back kind of event. Last year was the first year that we did the speakeasy and that was a great way to get some of the off-campus students to come back to campus,” she said.
Her main goals for the events are to bring students together and give them the space and the chance to meet new friends and new people. She looks forward to seeing impressive costumes.
The SEB’s Roaring ’20s night will begin at 7 p.m., and prizes will be drawn at 9:50 p.m. before wrapping up the night at 10 p.m.
