ASWSU unanimously passed a transparency bill Wednesday.
The bill, authored by first-year delegate Avery Long, aims to provide more transparency to students about who they are voting for in ASWSU elections.
“Declaration of Candidacy packet must include: the full legal name(s) of the candidate(s), the email and phone number(s) of the candidate(s), the position being sought [and] a dated signature of each Candidate indicating that the information contained within the Declaration of Candidacy packet is true and accurate,” the bill said.
This Bill is a modification to Article 707.03 of ASWSU’s Bylaws. It adds the item line declaring a candidate must state the position they are seeking.
Long said this modification aims to bring further clarity and transparency to students during candidate elections.
“[It] is just adding a clarification, saying that the title that you’re going for, executive or legislative, is clearly written on the packet, just so that we are remaining ethical to the students [and] they know exactly who they are putting in the running,” Long said.
Also announced at the meeting was an upcoming leadership event. Hannah Wargo, registered student organization graduate assistant, introduced the event.
“Later this month, [the Center for Student Organizations] are going to be flying out a keynote speaker from Indianapolis to talk to student leaders on campus about owning their influence and how to become the most effective leader that they can be,” Wargo said.
The leadership event will take place in the CUB Senior Ballroom on Feb. 27 with David Gibson as a keynote speaker. It is free to attend.
“[It will take place] from 5–7 p.m,” Wargo said. “From 5–5:30 p.m. is going to be kind of a networking event and then [afterwards] the speaker is going to deliver the keynote. The event is geared towards students that are already serving in leadership positions on campus.”
