In their second game of the Kleberg Bank Classic, the Cougars lost 7-6 at the hands of the UCLA Bruins.
The Cougs received a strong start from redshirt freshman starting pitcher Nick Lewis, who struck out four batters in five innings and allowed just a single earned run. He left the game with a 6-1 lead.
The Cougs built their lead early, with big games coming from first baseman Ryan Skjonsby and third baseman Luke Thaile. Skjonsby went two-for-five with an RBI, a run scored and a double. Thaile went three-for-five, with an RBI. Freshman second baseman Ollie Obenour led the team with two runs scored, and all but two members of the starting lineup checked in with at least one hit.
Transfer Troy Shepherd came on in relief and tossed two scoreless innings, before things started getting dicey in the eighth inning. The Bruins scored a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2. Then with two on and two out, a two-run double off the bat of AJ Salgada made it a two-point game.
The Cougars went to Jake Tedesco to close the game in the ninth, but the Bruins continued to fight back. In a similar situation to the Cougars extra-inning loss at Arkansas, UCLA loaded the bases to begin the inning, with two walks and a single. With nobody out and the bases loaded, UCLA was hit-by-pitch on back-to-back at-bats, tying the game at six. Then Jarrod Hocking won the game for the Bruins on a walk-off walk. Despite only having one hit in the inning, the Bruins scored three runs and won the game 7-6.
WSU falls to 0-6 on the year and has now been walked off twice. Tomorrow, they meet Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the first of two games against the Islanders, who are currently 1-5 and coming off a loss to Michigan State.
