After securing their first win of the season Thursday 12–7, WSU carried the momentum into Friday as their pitching staff and hitting combined for one of their best performances of the year.
Iowa junior utility player Caleb Wulf kicked off the game driving in a run off a double to left field. However, Cougs junior Gavin Roy bunted in sophomore Ricco Longo to tie the game later on in the fourth. In the same inning, junior Luke Thiele followed suit and bunted in a run to give WSU the 2–1 lead.
Junior Jackson Beaman responded quickly for the Hawkeyes with a statement home run straight away to center field, tying up the game in the fourth. Wulf singled in the following inning to give Iowa the lead.
Roy clutched up in the sixth with a single to center, driving in senior Jack Weise and tying it 3–3. Senior catcher Will Cresswell kept the momentum going and drove in Roy off a towering double to center field.
Both Roy and Thiele picked up additional RBIs in the seventh making it 6–3. Wulf attempted to catch up to the Cougs in the seventh with his third RBI of the night, but it was not enough as junior first baseman Ryan Skjonsby singled making the final score 7–4 in favor of WSU.
Right–handed junior starting pitcher Griffin Smith put together another quality start for the Cougs, going five innings and allowing three runs. Junior left-hander Troy Shepard came first in relief and only gave up one run through 1 1/3 innings pitched. Finally, junior right-hander Luke Meyers closed out the game going 2 2/3 innings and allowing zero runs.
With three RBIs from Roy, two from Thiele and a stellar pitching performance from the team’s bullpen, WSU earned their win on Friday.
The Cougs remain in Texas for their final two games against Iowa on Saturday and Sunday.
