Pullman’s newest thrift store, Oscar’s Closet, is located in the Gladish Center—just up the road from the main stretch of downtown Pullman—and can be accessed off West Main Street. It is open from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
The store is operated by Friends of Gladish, a local non-profit. The store’s name pays homage to Oscar Gladish, a 20th-century mayor of Pullman, from whom the center and foundation also find their namesake.
Mary Kittelson, Friends of Gladish director, said they opened the store with the intention of fundraising for the center. She said she hopes the store can be an affordable option for students in Pullman.
“We knew that there was a need in the community, especially in a college town,” Kittler said. “After [students’ first year], they’re all moving to apartments and there are a lot of grad students and postdocs that are living in apartments. Most people live on a shoestring budget this day and age, so it’s just one of those things that we can help the community with and give back a little bit.”
The store itself contains two large rooms, full of clothing, dishware, books, movies and more, in addition to a spacious dressing room. There is a large selection of women’s clothes available in an array of sizes and styles and most clothing is under $5 unless marked otherwise.
“We’re working at trying to get a little more children’s clothing and a little more men’s clothing, but we have quite a good selection right now,” Kittelson said.
Oscar’s Closet accepts donations during the store’s hours of operation. There is also a donation drop box near the Gladish’s main parking lot.
