Pullman’s Police Chief Jake Opgenorth officially handed in his resignation, according to a press release from the City. Opgenorth submitted his resignation Thursday, taking effect immediately and ending his more than 30 years in law enforcement.
Opgenorth has been on administrative leave since Dec. 17 after allegations of sexual assault and domestic violence were made against him. Three days later, a protective order was filed against him by a female colleague who worked on the Pullman Police Advisory Committee with him.
The order was later denied by Whitman County Judge Rodger Sandberg who found no substantial evidence to support the claims against Opgenorth, according to an earlier Daily Evergreen article. A protective order issued against the unnamed female by Opgenorth was also denied by Judge Sandberg.
As part of his administrative leave, Opgenorth had to surrender both his personal and his department-issued firearms.
According to the press release, Cmdr. Aaron Breshears will remain acting police chief until a new police chief is chosen. Breshears has been working as acting police chief since Opgenorth was placed administrative leave.
“The Pullman Police Department remains committed to providing the best possible service to our community,” Pullman Police said in an Instagram post.
