WSU President Kirk Schulz named John Johnson, senior associate director of athletics, the interim athletic director Monday afternoon, according to a WSU athletics news release. Johnson temporarily replaces former Athletic Director Bill Moos, and will begin his temporary role effective Wednesday.

“John is an outstanding administrator and a fierce advocate for the Washington State University athletics program,” Schulz said. “I couldn’t ask for a better-qualified individual to make sure that Cougar athletics continues to excel as we search for WSU’s next athletic director.”

Johnson will serve until a new director is named, according to WSU athletics. Though, he is not a candidate for the permanent position.

The decision comes in the wake of Moos’ move to Nebraska. He agreed to a five-year contract worth $1 million annually, plus incentives with the Cornhuskers.

Schulz also announced the members of the new athletic director search committee. The group is comprised of Schulz, Jack Thompson, June Daugherty, Gary Schneidmiller, Abu Kamara, Nancy Swanger and Greg Rankich.

Johnson and Schulz will discuss the future of the WSU athletic department during a news conference tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the Cougar Football Complex Media Room.
