Following a historically successful season, WSU soccer Head Coach Todd Shulenberger has signed a restructured contract that will run through 2023. The agreement was announced by Interim Director of Athletics John Johnson on Tuesday.

“I am excited to announce the contract extension for Todd, as he has taken the program to a new level,” Johnson said, according to WSU Athletic Communications. “Todd has progressively developed the program and has provided outstanding leadership as the head coach of the soccer program. We are pleased to recognize his hard work and dedication to Washington State with this extension and look forward to future success.”

Shulenberger led the Cougars to their best regular season finish under his direction. WSU made it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after a 10-8-4 overall regular season record. The Cougars consistently showcased their defense with 11 total shutouts, the second-most in program history.

The most memorable of those shutouts came from an upset victory against then-undefeated No. 2 University of California, Los Angeles. The Cougars took an early lead at home and held the visiting Bruins to pull off the largest upset in program history.

“It’s definitely a special time to be a part of WSU soccer,” Shulenberger said. “This record setting season was a complete effort from the entire soccer staff and all student-athletes on this team.”

Shulenberger first signed with WSU Athletics in April 2015, taking over for former Head Coach Steve Nugent. In three years, Shulenberger has helped lead the team to two postseason appearances.

WSU will look to build upon its successes this year and continue its NCAA Tournament run in 2018. Nine of 11 starters are expected to return.
