Timeless garments decorate hall of library atrium
April 8, 2014
The Apparel, Merchandising, Design & Textiles department is giving the Terrell Library Atrium a lesson in comfortable fashion.
This week’s Sumptuous Silk exhibit displays nearly a dozen silk garments from various periods of the 21st Century. Early-depression era pieces share space with outfits from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
According to librarian Mary Gilles, some of the garments come from the AMDT department’s collection of historic costumes. Others were collected from thrift stores and personal contributions. None of the outfits look alike and are made from different types of silk including velvet, satin and broad cloth.
The AMDT department hosts a fashion-related exhibit each year during Mom’s Weekend, and organizers of the event hope to grab attention during campus tours.
“It adds a little bit of interest for mom’s visit,” Gilles said. “It’s one more thing that moms and daughters can do.”
In past years, the exhibit has featured little black dresses, American fashion designers and wedding dresses.
The Sumptuous Silk exhibit is free and available for viewing all week.
