No. 22 WSU volleyball took down No. 21 University of Arizona 3-2 in a thrilling five set comeback victory Sunday to improve its record to 4-2 in Pac-12 play.

Three Cougars led the team for a combined 52 kills. Senior outside hitter McKenna Woodford led the team with 18 kills, and senior outside hitter Taylor Mims and middle blocker Ella Lajos both had 17 kills. While Mims had 11 errors, she did her job in setting up teammates with 56 assists.

Woodford had 40 assists and placed second on the team in hitting efficiency with .375 and she hit a career mark of 1000 kills during the match.

“[Woodford] had a fantastic weekend,” Head Coach Jen Greeny said in a WSU news release. “She just played extremely well, very consistent and just did a really nice job, and her offensive numbers were off the charts this weekend.”

Arizona seemed to be too much to handle in the first set and the Cougars did not help themselves with seven errors and a .167 hitting efficiency, losing the first set 25-20.

The second set was the same story with WSU shooting itself in the foot with mistakes late in the set. In both sets the Cougars had a chance to come away with the victory, but they did not display the level of consistency that Greeny had said was necessary in her latest press conference.

This would lead to the Cougars being down 2-0 after losing the second set 25-22.

In the third set Arizona looked like it had locked it up with a 23-21 lead, but WSU was not going to back down. Arizona attempted to close out the Cougars but WSU would not give up on its way to a comeback win, winning the set 25-23.

The fourth set was close until the Cougs pulled away, winning the game 25-20.

The Cougs were not to be denied in the fifth set as they got the lead right away and held on until Arizona tied it up 13-13. WSU would win the fifth set 15-13 and the match 3-2 in a comeback victory.

The Cougars will hope to ride the momentum of their four-straight Pac-12 wins as they head to California to face No. 2 Stanford University at 8 p.m. Friday.
